Mazda has become the first marque to sweep all three rounds of the Petron Makabayan Cup, with the #55 Team MSCC Mazda Miata delivering a landmark 2025 season in what is widely regarded as the Philippines’ toughest endurance racing series.

The Makabayan Cup is made up of three endurance events: the four-hour Kagitingan Cup, the 12-hour Kalayaan Cup, and the eight-hour Bonifacio Cup. Staged at Clark International Speedway or Batangas Racing Circuit, each round is held on dates of historical significance, adding extra weight to one of the country’s most demanding circuit competitions.

After seven years of development and competition, the Mazda MX-5 finally completed a full-season sweep in 2025. The achievement underlined the roadster’s long-standing reputation for balance, durability, and reliability, while the #55 Team MSCC Mazda Miata also established new performance benchmarks across the season.

Its journey in the series began with a one-off appearance in 2017 before a formal campaign started in 2019. Since then, the race car has evolved steadily. In 2022, the #55 machine appeared in its distinctive “Imagine” livery, before adopting a dramatic full carbon-fiber body in 2024. For 2025, it reached what is described as its ultimate form with the addition of a quick-shifting sequential gearbox.

Notably, the car retained its stock 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine producing 184 PS and 205 Nm. Despite conceding outright power to more powerful purpose-built race cars, the MX-5 remained competitive by leaning on its lightweight agility, nimble handling, and mechanical balance.

That formula paid off emphatically. Alongside victories in all three legs of the 2025 Makabayan Cup, the #55 Team MSCC Mazda Miata set new lap records in each round, highlighted by a 2:06.6 lap at the 4.189-kilometer Clark International Speedway.

“The 2025 MSCC Miata Endurance Race Series marks a historic milestone for Mazda Philippines,” said Steven Tan, President of Mazda Philippines. “Our success this year isn’t just about winning a season. It is a culmination of seven years of commitment, refinement, and belief in the MX-5 platform.”

The team is backed by Mazda Philippines, with support operations led by Edgen Dy-Liacco. Driver duties were handled by an experienced lineup headed by Angie King, Windy Imperial, Tyson Sy, Juha Turalba, Matt Solomon, and Milo Rivera.
