Mitsubishi Motors has announced its intention to join the Philippine government’s Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), marking a significant step in the automaker’s electrification plans in one of its key Southeast Asian markets.
The announcement came during a meeting between President Marcos and Takao Kato, chief executive officer of Mitsubishi Motors. If the company’s application to participate in the EVIS program is approved, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) plans to begin producing a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) at its Santa Rosa City, Laguna plant around the middle of 2028.

The planned move would position the Philippines as part of Mitsubishi’s broader push toward electrified mobility while strengthening the country’s local automotive manufacturing base. Alongside the start of HEV production, MMPC is preparing additional investments, including facility upgrades to support electrification.
Mitsubishi said these initiatives are expected to help expand the local supply chain and create employment opportunities in the region, aligning the project with the Philippine government’s industrial development and clean mobility goals.

“The Philippines has long been one of our most important markets, where we have engaged in production and sales for many years. In cooperation with the Philippine government, we are honored to contribute to the advancement of vehicle electrification and industrial development through the EVIS program, as well as to support the further growth of the Philippine economy”, said Kato.
The development underscores growing momentum behind electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle manufacturing in the Philippines, as the government works to attract fresh investment under its EV incentive strategy and accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation.
